Florida Adoption Month 2025: A Time to Celebrate and Take Action

AdoptionBy: Sarah Oquendo, Esq.

November marks National Adoption Month, a nationwide effort that began in 1995 to raise awareness about the more than 100,000 children currently in foster care across the United States. It’s also an opportunity to honor the adoptive and kinship families who open their hearts and homes, providing these children with the love, stability, and permanence of a forever home.

National Adoption Day

The Saturday before Thanksgiving is observed as National Adoption Day, when courts across the country, including here in Florida, finalize adoptions and celebrate the creation of new families. This year, Florida has designated Saturday, November 22, 2025, as its official National Adoption Day.

Florida’s Progress in Foster Care Adoptions

Florida continues to make meaningful strides in connecting children with families. According to the Florida Department of Children and Families (DCF), 3,969 children were adopted through the state’s foster care system during the 2023–2024 fiscal year.

Through its Permanency Initiative, DCF has streamlined adoption processes, resulting in a nearly 10% increase in finalized adoptions compared to the previous year. These numbers reflect the dedication and tireless work of child welfare professionals, as well as the compassion of adoptive families across the state who are committed to helping children thrive.

Benefits of Adopting through Florida’s Foster Care System

Adopting through Florida’s foster care system offers a range of benefits that make the process more accessible and supportive.

  • Free training and home studies. Prospective adoptive parents receive guidance and support at no cost.
  • Financial Assistance. Court fees may be covered for families with financial need. Compared to private adoptions, which can cost upwards of $30,000, foster care adoption is significantly more affordable.
  • Educational benefits. Children adopted through the foster system are also eligible for free tuition at any Florida state university, college, or vocational school until the age of 28, a benefit that is especially valuable for families adopting older children.
  • Monthly subsidy. In addition to educational support, families may receive financial support to help with the costs of raising the child until they turn 18, based on the child’s individual needs.
  • Healthcare coverage. Adopted children who receive this subsidy are also eligible for Medicaid.
  • State employee incentive. Florida provides a one-time payment of $10,000 for the adoption of a child with special needs or $5,000 for a child without special needs.
  • Federal Adoption Tax Credit. Families adopting children with special needs can also claim the maximum Federal Adoption Tax Credit, even without documented expenses. Although the credit is non-refundable, it can significantly reduce federal tax liability and make adoption more financially feasible.

These benefits not only reduce the financial burden of adoption but also encourage more families to consider fostering and adopting children in need.

How You Can Support Florida Adoption Month

Florida Adoption Month is both a celebration and a call to action. With thousands of children still waiting for permanent homes, families are encouraged to explore the possibility of adoption and learn more about the process. Whether by attending informational sessions, connecting with local agencies, or simply spreading awareness, every effort brings a child closer to a loving, stable future. Adoption is a life-changing journey that not only transforms the life of a child but also enriches the lives of those who welcome them home.
